Mr. Krauthamer, Syosset High School

Mr. Krauthamer, Syosset High School

My inspiration came from a high school teacher named Mr. Krauthamer. I was in his class for 10th-grade world history. I really enjoyed his sense of humor and he often had to tell me to let others participate. (I loved his praise when I participated; I didn’t do it often in other classes.)

In the spring of my 11th-grade year, Kraut (as we all called him) came to me and said, ”I want you to take my AP macroeconomics class next fall. We’ll have a lot of fun.” I was a little taken aback and told him so. He reassured me that I didn’t have to take the AP exam and that the material really wasn’t that hard.

Ms. Lee, Roff High School

Ms. Lee, Roff High School

I had Ms. Lee for English I through IV. She didn’t believe in accepting less than your best and never gave out 100s on writing assignments.

I was friends with her youngest son and he told me that one night she spend four-and-a-half hours grading a one page paper I had summited to find a mistake so I could get my usual 99.

Emma Cooper, Emma E. Cooper Primary

Emma Cooper, Emma E. Cooper Primary

There aren’t enough good things to can say about the woman who was my first-grade teacher and therefore my formal introduction to education. She taught me such essentials as reading, writing my name, math and more.

But more than that, Mrs. Cooper was a staple of our small, island community; by the time she was teaching me she had already taught my father, aunts, uncles and so many of the leaders in my hometown. Everyone loved her, and they still do, for her emphasis on teaching the whole student. No one left her classroom without learning what it meant to be kind, how to share, how to have good manners, how to speak respectfully to adults and to each other and so much more. She didn’t just teach us, she loved us!

Mrs. Kim Morris was the most inspirational teacher I’ve ever had. She believed in me, even when I did not believe in myself. She taught me how to read and write. She also taught me how to enjoy life and how to love. She was such an inspiration to me. I will never forget Mrs. Morris.

Julie McKee, Stamford Central School

Julie McKee, Stamford Central School

Mrs. McKee (who was Miss Hunter at the time) was such a phenomenal English teacher. She fostered my love of reading and was always encouraging me to try new genres and broaden my horizons. She especially helped me to grow as a writer. I developed a love of vocabulary as her student, which she helped me to embed within my prose. Subsequently to moving to a new town and then graduating from high school, college, and graduate school, I’ve been able to keep in touch with Mrs. McKee. Her calm, nurturing, and encouraging ways are hopefully reflected when I work with my current students today!

Anne Costello, St. Bavo

Anne Costello, St. Bavo

When I was in sixth grade, I discovered a passion for writing. This passion could have been stifled by a strict curriculum, but instead, it was nourished by Mrs. Costello. She was an amazing English teacher who made class fun, who pushed students to their limits, and who truly cultivated a culture of learning. With her help, I pushed myself to be a better writer and to read as much as I could. She kept in touch with me throughout high school and college and it was a moment of serendipity when I ended up teaching ninth grade English in the same building as her. I wouldn’t be the person or teacher I am today without her influence, and I am so thankful I had her as a teacher.

Mrs. Crowley, Blasdell Elementary

Mrs. Crowley, Blasdell Elementary

There is one teacher during my schools years that really stands out above the rest. My fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Crowley, taught me a lot of things. I believe it was the year that really made me begin to respect, admire, and enjoy school. Mrs. Crowley taught me the love of writing. She made me love writing, to this day. I remember that she made it so interesting, so much fun, and made me WANT to write for the enjoyment of it, not because it was required. Now, it makes me wonder if it was her favorite subject to teach, and if she wrote for fun. I get some of my ideas to teach from what I remember learning from her.

Ms. Christine Ochoa, Sam Houston Elementary School

Ms. Ochoa opened up a world for me that I never knew existed within me. She opened up the beautiful world of writing. She was my 6th grade teacher and she gave us weekly creative writing assignments. She would read aloud my stories every chance she got. She taught me that it was cool to be a writer and encouraged my every endeavor. She made me feel so good about it. I fell in love with writing that year, and have loved it since. I am now an English teacher and I have her to thank for it.

Ms. Dolores, Bishop John Elementary School

Ms. Dolores, Bishop John Elementary School

My story is of Ms. Dolores who was my 1st grade teacher. I still remember her classroom, her voice, what she wore, and her smile. Ms. Dolores was a very sweet and patient teacher who taught me how to spell and read. I remember her telling me to take my time and encouraging me when I didn’t have confidence in my own abilities… I was 6.

I remember her smile in the morning saying ”hello” and ”good morning.” I remember watching her when I was 6 and thinking, ”I want to be just like her when I get big.”

John Rubadeau, University of Michigan

John Rubadeau, University of Michigan

John Rubadeau has a Santa Claus beard that he dyes orange for Halloween. He uses the f-word constantly, tells humorous anecdotes about former students, and goes on manic tangents that have no apparent relation to the topic at hand. John is an English professor at the University of Michigan who teaches an upper-level seminar on essay writing, and he is also the most influential teacher I have ever had.
