Emma Cooper, Emma E. Cooper Primary

Emma Cooper, Emma E. Cooper Primary

There aren’t enough good things to can say about the woman who was my first-grade teacher and therefore my formal introduction to education. She taught me such essentials as reading, writing my name, math and more.

But more than that, Mrs. Cooper was a staple of our small, island community; by the time she was teaching me she had already taught my father, aunts, uncles and so many of the leaders in my hometown. I spent countless times in the corner that year, but I never doubted that Mrs. Bonnell loved me! She made me feel like I was someone special.

Four years later my father passed away. Mrs. Bonnell came to my father’s funeral to pay her respects. I was amazed, and from then on I knew I had to become a teacher. She really cared about us! I want to care for my own students the same way she cared about me.

Ms. Dolores, Bishop John Elementary School

Ms. Dolores, Bishop John Elementary School

My story is of Ms. Dolores who was my 1st grade teacher. I still remember her classroom, her voice, what she wore, and her smile. Ms. Dolores was a very sweet and patient teacher who taught me how to spell and read. I remember her telling me to take my time and encouraging me when I didn’t have confidence in my own abilities… I was 6.

I remember her smile in the morning saying ”hello” and ”good morning.” I remember watching her when I was 6 and thinking, ”I want to be just like her when I get big.”
