David Potter, Monroe Elementary School

David Potter, Monroe Elementary School

When I think of teachers who made a difference in my life, I easily think of Mr. Potter. He helped me come out of my shell and built my self confidence more than any other teacher in elementary school. He made school fun. I specifically remember him starting a new unit in reading by playing, ”Here comes the sun” by the Beatles. So whenever I hear that song, I think of his class. Unfortunately, I believe he stopped teaching and I never knew if he ever got back into it. If not, it’s a loss to many students who could have benefitted from his optimism and energy.

James Holt, Joseph A. Craig Sr. High School

James Holt, Joseph A. Craig Sr. High School

I blew off High School. Nothing more than a place to socialize, as far as I was concerned. But I was smart, and Mr. Holt knew it. He would tell me to get off my ass and make something of myself. I didn’t listen, and after high school, I went from meanial job to job. When I was 30, I’d had enough. I went to Blackhawk Tech to get a degree as a medical assistant. There were many times I wanted to quit. What was I thinking? Can’t do it. Then I would think about how Mr. Holt believed in me, and that got me through. He wrote back, thanking me for the letter, and told me it actually brought a tear to his eye. Thank you, Mr. Holt!

Sally Cullen, Marshall Junior High

Sally Cullen, Marshall Junior High

Shallow as it sounds, I first wanted to be a French teacher like Sally because she was cute and perky and had a great wardrobe. Now I’ve been teaching French for over 25 years and I can see how remarkable her gift for teaching is. She is creative and hard-working, demanding and caring, and she has a little bit of rebel in her. She made class exciting, fascinating, fun, challenging. And when I learned in college and through experience what makes an excellent teacher, I was finally able to see that I had had one of the best. Merci, Madame Cullen!
