Michael Manion, Immaculate Heart

I still remember Mr. Manion. He was my history teacher. I wasn’t a very focused student and I didn’t have money like most of the girls that went to the school, but he always made an effort to include me and make me feel smart. I remember a group was going to attend Model UN at USC and I could not afford to go. He helped me get the money and at the Model UN helped me with the questions and debating process. Maybe that is one of the reasons I love history today. I try to be understanding and helpful with my students because I remember how that little extra attention made me want to learn. I know Mr. Manion has retired now, but I hope he knows that he not only was a good teacher but a great role model.

Nancy Barney, St. Paul the Apostle School

Nancy Barney, St. Paul the Apostle School

Miss Barney was the science teacher at our elementary school. She is responsible for bringing out the inner nerd in me. Always spewing out terms in Latin and Greek, she encouraged us to explore our interests and engage in wordplay. She even gave us Latin nicknames! I was especially excited when we were dissecting frogs. Most of the kids were done with their dissections, and I asked Miss Barney if I could continue my dissection so I could find the brain. She encouraged me to go on with it, and after a delicate operation, we finally made it to the teeny tiny brain within that frog. Thank you, Miss Barney! You inspired me to be a teacher.
